Mirapex Information
Since Mirapex was first approved by the FDA in July 1997, thousands of patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease and Restless Leg Syndrome have been prescribed Mirapex. However, many of these patients are still unaware of the risks associated with the drug treatment.
Mirapex is marketed in the US by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Mirapex was approved by the FDA on July 1, 1997 for the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson's disease. The medication acts in boosting the action of dopamine that is available in an individual's system. Mirapex benefits patients in that it increases the amount of time during the day patients will experience symptom free stretches. Mirapex can be used in combination with other Parkinson's medications such as: Eldepryl, Sinemet, and Larodopa. Available Mirapex dosages include: 0.125 mg, 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, or 1.5 mg pills.
Mirapex has been linked to impulse control disorders like gambling. Many patients who use Mirapex for treatment of PD or off label purposes are still not aware of the behavioral issues it may present. In recent years, information has become available that is motivating those who learn of gambling and Mirapex and other behavioral problems linked to taking the drug to pursue legal action against the manufacturer of Mirapex.
Pramipexole is used to treat Parkinson's disease with or without simultaneous levodopa therapy. Since use of the drug may be associated with a slower decline of dopaminergic neuronal function compared to initial treatment with levodopaIn clinical trials, treatment of early PD with pramipexole monotherapy has shown promise . It is very much like pergolide and bromocriptine but it is not an ergot alkaloid. Mirapex use can improve motor performance and the lives of patients with early or advanced Parkinson's disease or Restless Leg Syndrome often in the first 2 to 3 weeks of starting therapy. Patients using Mirapex are sometimes able to and have been able to decrease levodopa dosages by about 27% can have a shortened "off" period. The fact that it often decreases orthostatic hypotension is another perceived benefit of pramipexole.
